Culture and Health

Vision paper: Culture, health and wellbeing

Between October 2019 and November 2022, the Centre for Cultural Value conducted an extensive literature review in the field on the role of culture in promoting people's health and wellbeing according to the most recent research, both to contribute to the creation of a happier and healthier society and to highlight the main challenges that cultural participation and creative expression can respond to and indicate areas of research still lacking.
Six main themes were explored:
-Social prescribing through the arts
-The experience of cultural practitioners working in health care
-The training and development of students in health care
-The mental health of young people
-The physical health of older people
-The wellbeing and social connectedness of older people.
Most of the studies considered were conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia.
