The Impact of Artistic and Cultural Engagement in the United States
Key Insights from the Research
The study results of the UF EpiArts Lab concerning Arts and Health show that creative hobbies can reduce depression in older and young adults. Just 1-3 hours a week of creative activities can reduce cognitive decline. These activities, including arts, sports, social groups, and volunteer work, also lead to fewer hospitalizations and better self-perceptions of aging, help reduce physical decline, and keep older adults independent longer. Young people who participate in arts activities are less likely to engage in antisocial behavior and substance use. There is also a strong relationship between the artistic engagement of young people and well-being (studies have found that lower socioeconomic status and the fact of being "black" can reduce engagement in the arts).
