Men’s Sheds are community spaces, workshops intended to help men come together inside their community. Activities typically involve woodworking but can include gardening, ceramics, photography, art and other social activities. The original idea was to help men in situations of isolation, for example, after retirement or the death of a spouse, after moving into a new community or the onset off a disability with a view to reducing age related discrimination. Studies on Men’s Sheds have shown various benefits including the development of skills, a sense of social belonging, greater wellbeing, higher self-esteem, a better perception of their own value and cognitive stimulation.
The study does not assess biological impact.
